Re: putting new Sprint into service

Ok, now I really need some help. I am the proud owner of a brand new Holz Her Sprint model 1310 with scrape and buff. I bought it from the authorised Holz Her dealer here in the Philippines. In fact the dealer here contacted me after receiving my info from the Holz Her guys at AWFS last year. This is my first real edgebander. I know and understand the processes and functions, but not the specifics.

The techs employed by my dealer are not familiar with this machine and are not able to instruct me on its proper use.

Here are two big issues I am having now.

The edgebanding is not going on straight. towards the end of the panel it gets lower. On a 400mm long panel it will drop 3mm or more exposing 1mm or 2mm of the board. It is the worst on .3 or .5 mm. It happens on 1mm and up but it usually does not show after trimming, but if I disengage the top/bottom trimmers you can see it is not running straight. when watching the tape go on it seems pretty obvious that it happens at the first (powered) pressure roller. I tried running in strip feed mode (no guillotine) to check if it is an issue with the guillotine. No change. The banding moves freely and all the guides are set to specs. I suspect this means the pressure rollers or the tape feed base are out of alignment. Any ideas?

Next problem is the top/bottom trimmers are over cutting on the front of the board and cutting less on the back. The over cutting is relative to the shoe not the tracing wheel. I did not notice this until I ran the trimmers in the radius position. I would say there is a 1mm difference. It is exactly the same on the top and bottom trimmers. I was thinking that it could the the pretension on the units. Any ideas?

Hello,
please see the attachment for the edge course setting.

I am thinkink the tracer shoes are not parallel for the cutter problem.
The tracer shoe must be parallel to the board. Please put a long work piece inside an stop it in front of the cutter unit.
Then you can check the tracer shoe position to the board.

Best regards

We are HOLZ-HER sales partner in Vietnam.

About your problem we had some experiences.

It sounds that your machine is quite new so the problem of edge band moving up-down on the workpiece should not happens if your machine comes with pressure unit 1913, because the machine was tested at factory carefully.
We have some cases in our market with thin PVC edge band 0.4mm thickness or wood veneer 0.4 up to 0.6mm. The problem comes from quality of edge band. You should un-roll about 2meters of edge band and check by your eye. Some poor edge bands form likes snake
If your edge band is good quality then follows Mr.Gerd Pluschy's guide.

Best regards,

Tran

Thanks to all who replied.

I was able to fix the tape alignment issue by adjusting the pressure units angle. When I checked with a precision square I found it to be 2 or more degrees out of alignment, so that the driven roller was contacting on the bottom and not the top. I adjusted the bolt under the miter gear and the one on the back wall.

I have visually inspected the alignment of the shoe. It looked to be square, but I will check with precision tools to confirm. Both the top and bottom trimmers are cutting in the same way, over cutting the first 20mm. It seems odd both would be out of alignment.

The pretension was set to exactly 0mm.I changed it to be 2mm as prescribed in the manual. This helped the cutting. But I still have the over cutting issue.

Also when the trimmers are set as prescribed in the manual for chamfering the edging is approximately .5mm above and below the panel. I assume this means the pivot point of the cutting is too far out. Or should this misalignment be considered acceptable?

Due to the lack of support in the Philippines I am hoping I can get a copy of the manuals for setting up and aligning the machine. I am thinking there may be a manual with instruction as to the initial setup, such as the one posted by Gerd.

Again this is a brand new machine that was shipped from Singapore 6 or 7 weeks ago. The build date on the machine says 2007, I assume that means it has been sitting in Singapore for 2 or 3 years. I do not know what kind of effect this long term storage might have had.

One BIG issue I have found. The rubber grommets used where the airlines passing through the metal frame have chemically reacted with the hoses causing them to be very brittle. Two hoses have blown out at exactly the point where they contacted the grommets. The blown out section was brittle and would crumble in my fingers and the affected section was exactly the same length as the grommet. There are also numerous small air leaks at various fittings.

I have emailed the Singapore tech support but they have yet to respond. I am disappointed that such a very costly machine was delivered without any training.

If it matters the model number is 1310 serial is 3946/0-708 5010334 Year on badge is 2007 and the series is KAM07V3

Thank you,

Mike

Hallo Mike!

I’m sorry for the problems you still have with your machine. As attachment I will send you documentation for end-trimming aggregate 1918.
http://teleservice-holzher.de:8080/hhfaq/Support-Faq/kam/mechanik-aggregate/1918/user-manual
I hope it will work for you.
I believe if you fix the problem with leaking tubes, you also improve the thing with end-trimming.
About the problem with leaking air tubes, we conserve our machines with special system. This system protects the machine for about two years from corrosion.
We got no knowledge about the problems with air tubes, like yours.
Please send us some pictures with the leaking tubes, to win cognitions for this problem.

With best regards
Robert Klampfl
